Announcing the first annual Beyond Ekphrasis juried competition.
Ekphrasis or ecphrasis, from the Greek description of a work of art, possibly imaginary, produced as a rhetorical exercise, and is a graphic, often dramatic, description of a visual work of art. In ancient times it referred to a description of any thing, person, or experience.
The point of departure for this project is Ekphrasis, but that is certainly not its limitations. For this call, we are asking for descriptions of unrealized or unrealizable works of art. These descriptions can take (m)any different form(s), not just written. To submit your descriptions, please choose the best method of documentation to fit your submission. If the description itself can be digitized (text / images / etc.) please do so and ensure that high quality files are submitted (print quality for images). If the description can not be digitized, please document it accordingly.
In addition to the work being displayed in the online exhibition space Gallery Gray (http://www.gallery-gray.com/), the juror’s finalists will be published in a zine style catalog which each participant will receive a copy of. Additional, physical, gallery locations are being discussed at the moment as well to further showcase the work selected.
Juror | Squeak Meisel
Squeak Meisel was born in Kansas in 1977 just miles from the continental center of the United States. He spent his youth watching the clouds roll by in all their endless elusiveness. His installations vary in size; some interact and contend with the street of the city while others define liminal spaces like a fireplace. Raised by a musician and a good listener he learned at an early age the power of sound to help define and stretch the senses to understand space. He uses this experience to help activate and challenge the boundaries between art and life; pointing to the human condition through site material and situation. Squeak is an Associate Professor of Art at Washington State University. In addition to having three permanently sited public works in the Seattle area he has exhibited his temporary site based works both nationally and internationally. He was a finalist for the Contemporary Northwest Arts Awards at the Portland Art Museum in Portland, OR in 2013. Most recently presented his work at the Performance Studies International conference at Stanford University. He proposes unrealizable projects all the time.
